| | | Re: Stop Cuts Yup...I see what you're saying, Rick. The slanted cut (in either direction, really) will give a cleaner look.
Funny, but I didn't learn the undercutting thing through a painter - I learned it from a carver who doesn't paint his carvings, and wanted to show me how to achieve more depth/shadowing without having to paint.
LOL...I guess there's always more than one way to 'skin a cat', eh?
Thanks for starting this little series of instruction, Rick....it helps all of us. Keep it up, PLEASE!

| | | Re: Stop Cuts You know, I just re-read through some of these 'lesson' posts from Rick. I hope you don't think my questions/comments are meant to to undermine what it is you're trying to get across, Rick - I'm really not. I know I can come off that way.
I'm really just adding my less-than-2-cents to try to get some good discussion going on each of these issues. One blessing this board has provided is that each of us can learn from others - no matter what skill level - especially through some thought-provoking discourse.
I'm still learning day by day....as I suppose we all are. These mini-lessons of yours are very helpful and I hope you keep them coming!
Humble Hugs,

| | | Re: Stop Cuts Teri,
I enjoy your playing 'devil's advocate'.
It gives me someone to argue a point with.
Of course, I am always right. Â*: |

| | | Re: Stop Cuts I just found this site and great tips. Just a quick comment on Rick's undercut. If your doing detail work early on, the slant as he describes will retain the strength of the wood surface. In other words, if your a bit heavy handed like I am, I make the final undercuts after all major carving is finished. I am less likely to ruin a detailed edge that way. Probably obvious to all, but I recall when I started carving that I was slow to catch on to that. |
