Hello Mathew, I think the best thing you can do to start is pick up a good pocket knife and start learning to sharpen it.

Second to learn control, just pick up a twig or small branch and create some wooden flowers. You do this by making a small curling shaving and keep it attached. The idea is the keep them thin enough and close enough together so that when you finally get to the center what looks like a small mum pop's off. My wife actually picked one up to check the smell once. She did finally forgive me for fooling her after a week or so Whittler

RE: Starting out
The above info is good but my very first recommendation would be to RUN to the nearest book/magazine store and pick up the latest WOODCARVING ILLUSTRATED magazine! Then check out all the ads for the suppliers and their web sites. Next subscribe to the magazine as it is worth every penny for the knowledge, ideas and how-to articles. The photo'y is professionally done as it shows in the details of the carvings. The magazine covers every aspect of carving including coverage of tools and sharpening. The stay tuned to this web site for more great help.
In this part of the country (Va), the stores listed above very expensive also & they can't adjust the price because the "home office" sets the price, so support the wood carver dealers listed in the magazine and you will get the best price & service possible. You'll find the dealers are carvers. also.

Dear Guest,
do check around your area for carving groups. Books are great but nothing beats actually watching someone do what they are explaining to you. People in carving groups are very friendly as a rule and are just thrilled to help somone new to carving. Good luck to you.
