Just of hand! who supplys this itasca? and the others? I have a package of 57 pcs of 2x3x12 and 200 pcs of 1x1x12 on Kiln dried on ebay if anyone is interested. $60 not including the shipping. I would say they are s2s instead of s4s. Plained on top and bottom. I know some forums dont like the listing of a products,I actually can tell you that most of the internet sellers have a steady supply from the small sawmills. I need to get a picture of it and post it on ebay. If you are interested, just e-mail me.

Itasca Wood Products, Copperhead Road Logging (Joe Jewett), and Dale Heinecke are all relatively small, family run operations. They have all worked hard and spent years establishing their reputations as quality suppliers of nothern grown basswood and other woods for the carving community.

While most of us don't have a problem with a little 'self promotion' on this board you might want to contribute a little on other subjects also. I'm sure your knowledge of woods, drying, processing, etc. will be a great resource for all of us.

Thanks for the response. I am interested in what it is that a carver is looking for in a quality block of basswood or carving wood. I have a fair idea, but that is mostly the exterior inspection for crack, stains, knots,so on and so on. Its the internal defects I am more concerned about. Soft spots and any other internal defects. If you have any ideas please e-mail me.
Ok to the self promotion! loljust going to give a little bit of info on that. We are pretty good on our prices for basswood and butternut, which we will soon be in kiln drying and that goes for a large amount of basswood as well. If anyone IS interested you can e-mail me at woodknomb@yahoo.com You can ask them then for the prices we have and for the website address .

Welcome to our obssesion!
A carving glove is a must. They can be quite expensive( $20 for one glove). If you know of any metal fabrication shops they have them and might give you a couple for a carving.
Looked at littleshavers.com and ricks beginners kit is a great deal.
also learn to sharpen it is the most important part.

Mathew, My best starting advise would be to check for the closest carving club to where you live and stop in at one of the meetings.

Good luck, have fun, carve safe, show us some pic of your carvings down the road.
