I am looking into getting a spokeshave for carving spoon handles. I was recommended to getting a convex spokeshave. I am just not sure where to buy one from. I saw concave spokeshaves but not convex. Can someone recommend some good ones for me? I was also recommended to get some files and rasps for carving. Does anyone know of a good place to get some for carving? Can someone tell me where to get beeswax?

Clifton and Kunz both have convex and concave shaves. My preference would be the Clifton......I have both and the Clifton are the better of the two, if set up right, the Kunz will work. Files and rasps can be found in most woodworking and woodcarvin g magazines. You would have to decide on the cut and coarse or fine or both. I have used a foredom with a round bit for the bowl and a cylinder for the handle at times. If you get a chance, try some sassafra.....smells nice while you work it. Hope this heps some and good luck!

Does it matter if I get a convex or concaeve shape? Would these rasps be good? Buy Carver's Rasp at Woodcraft.com Buy 4-in-1 Hand Rasp at Woodcraft.com

DMH ...Have you checked you local antique store? I have managed to get some great ones from them. Here is a tip that works for me very well the best VICE i have for making spoons is a Shaving Horse it clamps my work and is way faster then the bench vises of any kind. rasps and files I get at the hardware store. Lee Valley tools and Wood Craft have all these as well here is a pic of the shaving horse I built from found wood. and some spoons I do for the local markets and galleries... I hope you enjoy spoon carving as much as I do.... I carve most of my spoons from green wood they carve like butter and are quick using the shaving horse and the spook shaves and gouge for roughing then the sanding when they are dryed whole thing takes about 45-60 minutes

How do you build a shaving horse or where do you buy one? I have seen shaving horses before and thought that one would be very helpful but I have no idea where to get one.
