Well I tried the pipe and it just didn't work on this one so I guess I'll just work around the crack and finish it up

I agree with Colin and Thor - the wood came with the crack in it. The spirit isn't any less because of the crack.

If you're putting a pipe in the spirit's mouth, how about a meershaum pipe - maybe something like this:

By the way, only a new meerschaum is white; with age and a lot of smoking they turn a wonderful yellowish-brown almost translucent color.

I took some light wood off the back side and inlaid the eyes but after I brushed on a 50/50 mix of oil and spirits, it turned very dark.
Here is a pic before I continue on and try to lighten it (incase it becomes irredeemable)

Still looks great Elwood. At least better than my little bride when I wake her at 3 am in the morning. She is meaner with that 'Dang Club".

Yeper, That crack does give it special character.
Great piece.

I struggle with cracks all the time. Now I try to work with them in the carving. I would like to try carving on a piece of bark. Not too many trees carry a skin that thick in the maritimes (east coast, Canada) however.

I sent some bark to Gilly up in SAK awhile ago. Shipping was kind of expensive but if you want some, PM me, I'll scratch some up for you
