Rick is a very good source for information tools and know how.
let him know what your planning to do and he can guide you through the selection he has,,best.

i would recommend the dockyard gouges, i bought my set of 4 from him, but for the small knife set you need to look elsewhere, rick don't stock it all.. but him and Theresa is easy to deal with.. and ill bet you could special order through him,

my orders on Monday usually arrive by Friday,,he ships fast,
if you buy tools from him they come carving sharp, ready to use. and great for beginners as he offers sharpening service,, for cost of shipping for tools bought from him..

Rick has a selection of rambelson palm gouges down to 2mm so there is a source for small v tools. good tools that you don't spend half your carving time sharpening..

remember micro tools are not for rough work and hogging off lots of wood, there kinda delicate and will break if tormented, a good set of basic tools will complement a micro set of tools and save time getting to the detailing step.

i would also recommend the stubai line from www.woodcarverswarehouse.com , a little high dollar, but a joy to carve with, i won the set of 10 Midwestern palm tools here on WCI magazine top tip suggestions, and don't know how i ever did without them,
but for a beginner, i wouldn't suggest a beginner to rush out and toss out $200.00 until they were certain of their new hobby...

hate to make it sound like im getting hocking there wares but,,

After using them for 6 months,
if i didn't own that set, was in the market for tools and extra dough, i would jump on them,, im very satisfied....

its a special set they had ordered for a class or wood carving school and some how lost there customer, according to mark,

look at the tools and compare the prices of the individual tools, normally selling for $29.00 ea, now selling for $14.90 approx ea. its a big savings,, half priced,.. regular price near $300.00 for $150..

they are short handled palm knob tools, not for mallet use,,
now there all small tools, under 1/2" or 2mm to 8mm in size, 3 v tools and a variate of gouges in different profile,, from #3 to some deep u gouges, one 1/4"flat..
only thing i would add is the 4 Sweep 20mm (3/4") Shallow Gouge, 5" Palm it comes in handy for smoothing... i have a used woodcraft 18-20mm that works fine but takes more maintenance than my stubai tools,,
*** from advert clip---
Limited Quantaties!
Warehouse Exclusive!
Great for Teachers, Dealers, Clubs ... anyone looking for a fantastic carving set at a great price!
Includes these 5 tools from the Minnesota Set:
#3-5mm Palm (3/16")
#5-7mm Palm (1/4")
#9-6mm Palm (1/4")
#11-4mm U-Palm (1/8")
#47-4mm V-Palm (1/8")

PLUS:
#5-3mm Palm (1/8")
#11-3mm Palm (1/8")
#11-6mm Palm (1/4")
#41-3mm V-Palm (1/8")
#41-8mm V-Palm (5/16")

Each tool is packaged in a plastic pouch!
***end clip---
the most used tool in my set is the big v tool.. #41 8mm,
but they are hard steel, they come sharp ready to use and only need minimum honing occasionally.

A great early Christmas present,,,,,

talk to mark whillock there, he will tell you more about why they are for sale at that price. good folks there too..

maybe a mini as being under 9 mm, but should work pretty well for charters under 12 inches, keep the chips small..
but not micro like dockyard set of 5,
1.5mm to 5 mm "U" gouges,$40.00, more less for fine detail and charters under 2 inches,,

i wouldnt try a cigar store indain full sized with them,

i think they are located in Faribault, MN usa.

Edited for content: according to email from chris willock..
Ivan willock is still alive, and lives close to marve, who was ivans student,, there still friends and see each other often as possible.,
[Sorry for misinformation!]

lots of projects books and special tool set of marves can be found on that site that you cant find other places,

hope the tools arrive speedily and you enjoy them ,,,,

Thumbs up Re: So New

Hi All,
Well I ordered my beginners kit from Rick yesterday and now I can hardly wait to get started. I have found a local club, haven't been to a meeting yet but looks like I can get into fairly easily. They have a show coming up that I can go anad ask the members questions.

I look forward to learning a new hobby.

Thanks,
Marv
