| | So New Hi All,
I'm new to the art of carving and have been through most of the threads. I'm interested in carving caricatures and was wondering if the basic set from Ricks is all I need to get started? |

| | Re: So New Yes, that should get you off to a good start. You may decide to add some smaller gouges and v-tools as you go along but that set should get you started. You may also want to get a book or two on caricature carving. I like Jack Price's "Carving Compacter Characters" and Pete LeClair's "Carving Caricature Figuress from Scratch".
Make sure you use the glove and thumb guard!!! Even with them, you'll cut yourself sooner or later, why needlessly invite injury?

| | Re: So New Hi wood stuff, I agree Rick has a terrific beginner set. I have a good friend who bought the set and it has served her well--and we are still friends too. LOL At some point you'll find depending on what type of carving you want to do--you'll add more tools.

| | Re: So New Talk to Rick and tell him what you want to do. Depending on what specifically you want to carve, you may want the whole starter kit, or, he might be able to suggest a different route like just using a knife, and/or a gouge or two, and/or a v-tool along with a glove. Price wise it might be a little different, but fine tuning your inventory or tools in the beginning will save you from having extra tools that you might never use. |

| | Re: So New Hey woodstuff, nice that you're here. Now as to your question about Ricks stater/beginner tool kit. It's a great one to get you started, but if history proves anything at all, within 2 months you will have about 6 more knives as well as 10 more gouges. Good luck! You think I'm kidding......Tom H |
