I have to agree with Ed, the Kershaw Double Cross is a fantastic pocket knife for whittling/carving. It's definitely my favorite. Rick does carry them for a very good price at Littleshavers.

Would anyone recommend any good beginner books on carving (small objects) and reliefs? Thanks!

Dan

The first place I would go (aside from the Fox Chapel site of course) is Lora (Susan) Irish's site at www.carvingpatterns.com
She's got an on-line tutorial and more! She posts here on the message board as Irish.

Great! Thanks for the link!

Another thought...
I was wandering around a craft show the other day, and I saw some bowls that caught my eye. They were bowls, but made of different types of wood, like slices of wood put together some how, so it looked like one solid piece of wood, but it was actually several different types. If that makes any sense, does anyone know any informational links on this process? I thought it was very interesting.

Hi Dan, from what you want to carve, I would suggest you look for Richard Butz's book "How to Carve Wood", as a starter.
It takes you through a number of small projects , types of carving, caricature, in the round, birds, relief, chip etc. the type of tools to use and how to use them, sharpening etc.
After that book and if you are really interested in furthering your knowledge about woodcarving and tools in general, I suggest one of Chris Pye's book(s) , books because his second edition of "Woodcarving, Tools, Materials and Equipment" is two volumes now rather than one like his first. The first edition is still a valid buy in my view.
There are so many suggestions available about this book or that web site as being a good starting point for woodcarving, all are valid, some being more usefull than others, it's up to you to make a choice, so check them out..

.

Dan, depending on exactly what you saw, those "woods" were probably one of two things. First, pieced turning blanks that the woodworker made up himself or purchased, or if they were that multi-colored wood with 1/4" or less thick stripes, it was a laminated wood product avalable for turning small items, pens, bowls, etc. It is available from Rockler, Woodcraft, I think Lee Valley and several other supply shops.
