Default So it begins...YAY

Finally i got my pipe kit. Its smaller than i thought so i dont think i have to a lot of carving. But the wood quality is not so good either... well cant expect much from $20 ebay product.. anyway I will post my process at the new project section from now on. Oh and about opening my oar carver. Whittling Librarian suggested using folded card and it works really well!! Thanks a lot!

Wow, Looks like you lost weight worrying about this one. You had to shorten your belt.

Nice knife, and an interesting project.

One thing to think about when carving that pipe. If the wood is briarwood, that tends to be kinda hard. If your Oar carver was sharpened to cut basswood, then you'll have a good chance of folding over the edge. Because the knife edge/bevel for carving softer type woods (bass, butternut, balse, cedar...) is about 12 degrees. For hard woods, the bevel is higher -in the 18-20 +/- range. The greater the bevel the thicker the actual cutting edge is. Can you use the knife as is - yes, just take your time & make small cuts & be mindful of the cutting edge. IMO if you have access to power tools or gouges, they should give you better results than just a knife.

Big Barn made a great point. it looks like briar wood to me as well. you got a pretty good deal if you only paid 20 bucks. but it is no basswood the stuff carves like lose cement with all the grain direction changes
