Default Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Supply

Hello Fellow beginners,

I had the opportunity of visiting the Smoky Mountian Woodcarvers Supply, not sure I got the name correct, but it is the only one in Nauger Knob just outside of Townsend, TN.

I had the best time! Bought a great carving knife and even got a quick lesson on three types of cuts and the proper way of stropping. Their beginner book is outstanding and I would recommend it to any other beginner.

I am still in route to Mesa, taking a month in our RV from West Chester, PA to Mesa, AZ. We are in Benson, AZ today and will travel into Sonora, MX on Thursday and stay in San Carlos for a week. When I return to Mesa, I will finally get to put knife to wood. In the mean time, I am watching all the Gene Messer videos and getting excited!

Happy Carving!

John

I have the fortune of living very close to Townsend and I visit Mac's shop quite often. I took a class there with a few of the members on this board in early October and I am taking another one November 14-16. VERY nice folks there. You will find that they will help you any way that they can. The other artisians in the Nawger Nob guild are really great people too...and I don't believe it is just because I am a local. If anyone ever gets to the area, be sure to check out Mac's shop. Set a spell with him and he will be glad to answer your questions.

Mac is is the reason that I got hooked on carving again....

I am glad to see that my experiience in not an isolated case. Mac took the time to show me a few of the fundamentals and encouraged me to take a carving course. I will try to plan my next trip east around a class. I looked into his classroom while I was there and it is a perfect set up for a workshop on carving.

I see that Gene Messer wears a Nawger Knob shirt in one of his videos. Gene convinced me to subscribe to Wood Carver Illustrated. I looked through a copy of it at Mac's shop and decided that it would really help me in the learning and inspiration process.

In the mean time, I am enjoying the warm sun and cool Margaritas in San Carlos, Sonora, MX.

My wife and I are going on vacation to Gatlinburg next week. I signed up for a class at Nawger Nob with Ken Carter doing realistic faces towards the end of the week. I am looking forward to it with great anticipation. Anyone else from the board going to be there by chance?

Hi,
What a great treat you will have in that area. I love Cades Cove. Try a nice lunch at Cat's just across the parking lot. Nice folks and great food! The dullcimer shop just up the road is a nice visit also. Clingsman Dome is a good view east or west if you have the ambition to climb the steep hill from the parking lot.

I have been vicariously carving by watching Gene Messer's videos. I love how he approaches his projects! I wonder if he knows how much his effort is appreciated by us newbies?

Have agreat visit!

John
