I have the mini Master Carver tools, not bad for the price. I bought mine from Wood Carvers Supply, I was very unhappy with their customer service. Dave |

Bill, I think you can buy the larger gouges from most any of the better online carving supply shops. I would shop around a little.

Bill: I've bought carbide burrs and sanding disks from Wood Carving Tools - Wood Carving Supplies - Wood Carving Equipment - WoodCarversSupply.com and the service was fast, quality excellent. Haven't bought any gouges from them, but everything else was good. Claude |

Hi Bill, I have 2 sets of the mastercarver mallet tools plus 2 singles and like them very much. Love them in fact! They are not pretty perfect looking like the more expensive brands because they are hand wrought/ made/forged, whatever the right term is. They came pretty darn sharp, but i strop them on an old leather belt like I do the rest of my tools. The cutting angle is a little different that the more expensive brands. I carve really hard wood and they work great! Comparing them to my Two Cherries, Flexcuts and my antique mallet tools, well I like them all about the same. Yes they are made in China, but are not mass produced like the cheap Pitbull brand you find at flea markets and on Ebay. Apparently these kind of tools have been made and used in this Chinese region for a very long time. If you look at the carvings from China, and yes they are very skilled carvers, well, to me that says a lot about the tools also. As far as Woodcarvers supply goes, they have treated me decent. I bought the 2 sets from Marty at My Chip Carving, but the tool sets actually shipped from Woodcarvers supply. The only problem I had with one tool of the set, was I noticed one of the blades had a real fine crack in it. I noticed it months after I bought them. I called Woodcarvers Supply and we worked out something that I was happy with about the tool. I don't have a lot of experience doing mallet work, only about 9 months worth, but if I needed more tools, I wouldn't hesitate to buy more of these. If you end up getting some, just check the blade out to make sure its not cracked and let them know right away. So any way that's my 2 cents worth on these tools.

On another note about customer service for any outfit, I have noticed if I call up with a pleasant attitude, I get great service 99% of the time. When I was a hotheaded 20 something year old and had a bad attitude, I got lousy service for whatever I was dealing with!
