Hi All,
I have been having a ball doing Gene Messer's tutorials from square blocks of wood. I have a question, if a tutorial or pattern starts from a roughout - could you do that by hand - create the roughout - rather than use a bandsaw? For example, in Gene's tutorial Carving the Flat-plane style Santa, Gene gives a pattern, then it looks like he cuts out the pattern on a bandsaw. Now if I don't have a bandsaw, I should be able to get to the same roughout using a knife (albeit it will take longer). Is that a correct assumption?

Again, I can't say enough thanks to Gene for his great tutorials and You-tube movies.

Yup! That's the way I do most of mine. The exception is the larger pieces. Usually anything larger the 3 x 3 x however tall I do on the bandsaw (a coping saw will work also). Everything else I just carve with the knife. I enjoy making chips.

If you are doing miniatures, you could cut them out on a scrollsaw..otherwise you will have to get a coping saw....kind of a hassle but can be done....otherwise,,just keep carving!
