Question simple carving on seasoned cherry-unplaned

How difficult will it be to carve on some old cherry planks that my Dad cut many years ago? I want to carve and paint scenes on them.

They should be stable and make excellent wood for carving. Cherry carves well, holds detail well, and while it takes a little more effort than Basswood, the results are much more satisfying. Cherry will darken with age and exposure to sunlight, so factor that in to your efforts.

I carved some gnome bookends out of cherry years ago, It carved great and it took paint OK, but afterward I felt silly that I painted such a pretty wood. I also carved a relief of Johnny seed out of a slab that was accidently made while cutting wood, and I was amazed at the difference between the kiln dried and air dried.
