 Sharpening/honing Speedball gouges In a recent WCI several carvers where using a Speedball 1mm V-tool for fine lines. Last weekend I picked one up and found myself wondering wether I should just hone the rough ground edge (I think it is ground at what you wood call an obtuse (forward) angle) or do you re-shape it to a right angle I am used to with standard gouges? Your experience would be appreciated, as I perfer carving to grinding. Thanks!  |

| Re: Sharpening/honing Speedball gouges It could possibly benefit from some gentle honing. I wouldn't change the angle unless it fails to work the way you want it to. Speedball tools are made to cut at a low angle and the grind is proper for that. If you need to use a steeper angle, then you might regrind it perpendicular to the shank. I would guess with a 1mm V it wouldn't make much difference. |

| Re: Sharpening/honing Speedball gouges I use a speedball V-tool for fine detail lines and I just hone it on the hard arkansas stone and strop it just like I do my 'regular' tools. I wouldn't change the angle but honing and stropping seems to help any tools, even those with a 'factory sharp edge'. |
