Default Seeking good tools

Morning all.

I'm new to the carving scene and was wondering if anyone could give hints as to what a good set of knives, and other tools would cost. A good brand name for quality, and maybe a hint as to the name of a silent scroll saw suitable for apartment use.

Shadojack,

I can't answer about the scroll saw....

As for the tools, it depends on what you want to carve. You can spend $20 for a knive and get by or $hundreds for complete sets. If you look down at the bottom of this page, you will see some links to "Similar Threads" and can find some previous suggestions about tools....or do a search for tools suggestions. This will allow you to ask a more specific question about tools.

As for scroll saws, RBI 216 and the 220 Hawk are some of the best, DeWlat 788 is equally one of the best. Pricey but you pay for what you get. the cheaper models and brands, don't give you the same quality cuts as those above mentioned.
I suggest you go to the scroll saw board sponserd by Fox Publications.

Here's a good saw in use.

Cheap, Quiet, and you can use the entire blade.

The RBI's are great scroll saws, and would be my choice if I did a lot of scrolling. I like my Dewalt; it's a good saw and does a fine job on my carving blanks. Any scroll saw can vibrate, and some are downright scary at times. They're much quieter if they're bolted to the floor. Still, someone living below you might notice a scroll saw running. Get good blades; they make a huge difference. Flying Dutchman blades are great and cost no more than other brands. You can get free samples to try from www.mikesworkshop.com.

Carving tools are often discussed on this board. You'll find that cheap tools are just that. I hate to see beginners get discouraged because they get bad tools and the wrong wood, have a bad experience and give up. The best advice you'll see on this board is to cantact Rick at Little Shavers (also one of best posters), and he'll tell you what you need. You don't need much, but start right, get a carving glove, be careful, and enjoy.

I can't talk to the saw, but for carving tools, definitely put yourself in Rick's hands. He has a starter kit for 39.95 that you should take a look at. You can see it at http://www.littleshavers.com/Beginner.html

Aw shucks! I was thinking you were want'n a quiet saw!

I have a Delta 20" variable speed scroll saw that works real well. It can be a bit noisey but if you put it on a foam rubber mat it will quiet right down.

3-D scrolling is fun to do and the time slips right by just as in carving.

Thumbs up Re: Seeking good tools

I just ordered my beginner kit from Rick.

Hurry up mail delivery. I've got a '57 Chevy relief carving I'm dying to start on.

Thanks for the great tips folks.

I got the Moore carving set with instruction booklet and I got to say those are a nice set of knives. Really cut through well. Of course now I just need to get past the carving names in wood stage to something I can brag about.
