I have been carving woodspirits for a few years and have experimented with several methods for holding the limbs. I have settled on a procedure wherein I screw a small* block of oak to the back of the limb then using a workbench mounted vice to hold the piece while I work on it. I clamp the vice to the workbench with large clamps. This allows me to pivit the vice and the block in various directions. A couple of years ago I found a vice that rotate when the vice is loosened. This makes the work easier to manuver.

Good Day!

I have been carving Woodspirits for a few years and I carve almost all of them using a pipe clamp. I use a short length of pipe (18" or so) and bought a cheap 3/4" pipe clamp. I hold the pipe in a vise and the wood in the pipe clamp. It works well for me. Perhaps this is a quick inexpensive alternative.

Thanks, Brian Mac

I carved a lot of woalking sticks/staffs while in Scouting summer camps. The only holding device I used was my hand. First wearing leather gove and when the carving goves came out, used those. Not saying "not to use a holding devise other than your hand, just that sometimes a mechanical holding device isn't possible. I like Tom H's device on his carving station.
