Default Scrap Wood To Practise On

Hi,
I've contacted a few joiners and cabinet makers, telling them I'm learning to carve and have they any spare timber they don't want, they could give to me to practise on.
Anyone got any other ideas how to get it free?
Peter.

Won't these be pine, I've been reading a little about suitable wood to carve, seems some types of pine are best avoided.
Pete.

Try to locate a carving club in your area - check out WCI's club listing.

Do you have a local fire wood supplier? And as mentioned look at shipping crates if you go with this route take along a handsaw to cut the timber so it will fit in the car boot. Cheers on your skip diving for carving timber.

Eastern white pines carves ok, yellow pine - not so much. Pretty much depends on what you want to carve. Any wood can be carved, depending on how much effort you want to put into it. Basswood/Butternut are excellent if you can get it. You probably won't find pallets made of either of these.

Hi again Steve, thanks for that. I'm particularly interested in low relief, wild animals and nature.
Peter.

Pallet wood can be a good source but, be sure it was made domestically and that it did NOT come from overseas. That wood should have been fumigated either by spray or dust. Might develope some health concerns using foreign pallet woods. Just a cautionary note.
