Talking Santa upgrade

Hi, folks, thumbnail shows the latest Santas I've been carving, improvement over the early ones that were converted to Santa from the 5-minute Wizard.

Left to Right:

The first two Santas (slightly under 3 inches carved from 1" x 1" x 3" jelutong wood) is the inspiration from Gene's videos on You Tube "Whittling a face" and "Carving a simple Santa ornament" I sort of married the two ways of carving.

The one on the far right (3 3/4" high) is from Arleen's singing Santa #2 series on You Tube. Arleen used 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" basswood while I had to downsize mine onto 1" x 1" x 4" jelutong because I can't get jelutong board here that is thicker than 1" from which I cut into sticks. The downside was that I found I got no room to fit in the rope tassel that hang down from Santa's waist. Beard is too short compared to Arleen's model. Hope to develop downsizing skill in time to come.

The main thing is I enjoyed myself carving all those Santas.

Thanks, Gene, Arleen, for your video tutorials.

Wink Re: Santa upgrade

Looks like I'm heading that way, Ken, or at least until the next issue of WCI magazine. Some of the Santas I'd already carved are gracing the Christmas trees of friends. More Santas to carve now that the Holiday Issue #53 is at hand, and also the Hand Carved 39 Projects Holiday Gifts special issue has been received today. Wow, running out of wood soon.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and all on this forum.

Cute little Santas Ezzy! Looks like you've caught the 'Santa Bug' like many of us...fun and addicting isn't it... Always room for another Santa carver onboard the forum. Merry Christmas to you and yours and hope you enjoy all the Holidays too.

Talking Re: Santa upgrade

Hi, Doug, Kenn, and Hwallen48, thank you, for your encouragement. A smile, laughter, and a jolly image - they are infectious - Santa has them all. I think that's why so many are attracted to carving Santa. After all, Santa points to Christmas being a season of goodwill and cheer and renewal of family bonding. Let's go carve some more Santa.

Very cool Santas...wait whats the plural for Santa? Santas? Santi? Santa Clauses? Santae? Is there a book about the history of Hobos and Santae in wood carving like how did this all come about? Anyway good job and Arleen and Gene are awesome teachers too. Merry Christmas everyone.
