| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? You will not be wasting your time or money on scrapers. I have the set of 3 and use them all the time, on my carvings. They work well for removing tool marks, and cleaning up . Spend the extra money and get the tool to roll the edge. it is a 3 corner burnisher this will put the scaping edge on them. Go to wood carft and read the pdf file on scrapers. Ed

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Thank you Ed. I read the PDF and as Bob said it did refer to hardwood pieces only.
Are you saying the Scrapers would still be effective w/ a poplar?
Look forward to hearing back from you,

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Scrapers work well just keep the edge sharp and clean . Take light strokes. I have used scrapers on bass wood poplar and many others, with good results. If you want the tool marks to go away a scraper will do the job. Just like carving and sanding try to stay with the grain . The wood will smoth out eaisly and the tools marks will go away.

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Thanks Ed,
I've been to home depot in the paint and tool department and had a heck of a time finding the sand paper grits recommended by Bob earlier.
I think I'll head up to Woodcraft today and check on both sand paper and scrapers.
Thanks again,

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Remember sandpaper is probobally the cheepist thing your going to work with, The grit fills up and abrasive wears down as you work it,
throw away filled, worn, plugged up paper, becuse using it is only wasted effort to use it for one more stroke.
when its easy to grab another sheet and put the effort to good headway..
we all hate to stop when were in the creative mood,
Dull knives and wore out sandpaper is our worst enemys...
dull knives are hazardous and wore out paper just makes you tired... |

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Thanks for the tip Thomp, I have my tools and piece out at the car to take w/ me to Woodcraft today.
I think I'm gonna buy sand paper and the scrapers today. Uncle Sam just sent me the money he owes for State, when uncle fed comes I may buy the beginner set offered by one of the forum people here.
Regards,

| | Re: Sandpaper or Scraper? Well I bought both the scrapers and sand paper today among, and also picked up a couple of bent-back gouges for some rounding features I'm doing.
I also bought a japanese sharpening kit w/ a 800 and 6000 grit water stone and holder for my chisels, and new spoke shave I picked up for a staff I'm making. I figure I gotta learn some time.
Thanks for all the help everyone,
