Try NOT using your thumb as a stop for awhile. It can be done, and isn't that hard. Just takes a wee bit of practice. Makes life a whole lot simpler.

No thumb guard (I don't propose it for anybody else),

I like the coban wrap for my thumb. It is flexible, cheap ($3 a roll and it lasts a long time), and has saved my thumb many a time.
