Greetings forum friends, Now that I know what a rough-out is, it raises a question. For those who don't work with rough-outs, do you use power tools to rough out your piece when you start?. I didn't on my first piece but looking back, a band saw would have been a nice addition getting rid of the bulk. Thanks in advance for your input! James |

2 inch by 2 inch or larger, I use the bandsaw. Some 1.5 by 1.5 inch I use the bandsaw, the rest I just start carving with knife or gouge. 1 inch by 1 inch or smaller, knife is all I need to remove waste. Claude |

Been discussed, but couldn't find the older thread.... Band saw. I do use rough outs occasionally - many times NOT for their original intended design. |

I've used a coping saw before, but on anything bigger than 1x1 I can't keep a cut square. Now I have a bandsaw for things between 1-4 inches

Sometimes I use a band saw, sometimes a chainsaw, sometimes a power carver, a reciprocating carver, and some times I just whittle. I dont get too worked up how I get there as long as I get there Colin

Many thanks all, It seems to make sense to me to use a band saw or something to get rid of the big waste on larger pieces simply because it adds an element of safety to the whole process. I tend to whittle too hard trying to get close to the form I want, which leads to slipping at times. As usual, I really appreciate your input! Blessings, James |

A band saw is certainly nice to have, but I've been known to use a coping saw for smaller things. Even though my cuts with a coping saw aren't as precise as with a bandsaw, it beats hogging off all that wood with a knife. If you find yourself whittling too hard to rough out your piece, slow down! I have the same problem, although I'm learning to enjoy every chip. |
