Default rich

I feel like a million $...Got me a Donald Trump comb overTalking
I tried my hand at doing a caricature. I thought it looked perty good but my camera let me know it still needs work. I picked up
Marvin Kaiseratt book over the week end(Caricature heads in wood and on paper) I think it's gonna be a big help. Also got started on a bronco rider today and can see already that it's gonna be a challenge.

Ah but that be a better looking dude than "Donald Duck Thrump"

Looks good Elwood. I like the expression on that dude.
Know what you mean on challenging. Every carving is challenging to me.

Likewise This pattern is just a little big for my "toy" bandsaw so I'm having to use hand tool's to block it.

I just hate it when that happens. A guy cracked a joke when I was drinking coco. Instead of spewing it all over him I stood up to run outside, passed out while I was choking ,fell down and knocked myself out cold

I have been reading Lynn O Doughty's thread about constructive critism -sp?. I don't post a lot of pics of my work here because honestly most of what I do is pure horse pucky, however recently I have posted a couple of pics, one of a santa that I spent a considerable amount of time on and the caricature which was kind of a quick study or sketch which is a hangover from my drawing days. The idea of a sketch being to try to create something in a short of time as possible the purpose of which is to try to push yourself in directions not normally pursued. In the spirit of learning I would like some honest feed back on the previous two works even if you don't like the work. I'll be happy to answer question or provide pics from a differnt angle. If you do offer C&C, be prepared to answer numerous stupid questions (my perogative) and follow through on your thought's. Fair enuf?
Thanks EWT

Elwood,

I often feel I post too much. But I will tell you what I think. First the Santa.

A good piece. It shows a lot of work in the design and the completition. It is also a work completed the has good form and motion. I like it.

Now for the one your working on. I rarely post on chars. THis is not something I have a lot of knowledge of. I can not even tell you if the body lines are correct , because it is not something anyone but you would know. I can tell you it looks good, the carving looks clean . But since a caricature can be so broard ranged outside of simple basics of form there is little that can be posted about one , except a like or a dislike. Now if he was blocked , the nose missing , or something really out of place there would be something to say.

EWT: I have a couple of suggestions. First, the expression of the caricature's face is priceless! The clothing cuts look great too me, also.
1) I think he needs teeth. Look in a mirror and try to make that expression; you'll see teeth.

2) It may just be the angle of the camera, but the crown of his hat looks to be shifted a bit too far to his left. If it's not the camera, then next caricature, try to make the sides of the crown of the hat line up with the sides of the caricature face so it really looks like he's wearing the hat. I only mention this because I had a misalignment on a carving a while back that was so bad it is now mulch and wood chips for my yard. I try now try to frequently hold my carving out at arms length and look it over to see if I'm starting to get something out of alignment.

Claude

I thought it could use 'em also but I was afraid to try something that wasn't in the reference picture (it's got that crazy googenhiem effect)

You're right! I couldn't put my finger on it. The hat is supposed to be tipped to his left actually but I didn't quite pull it off.
I think there's a enough wood left over I could make an adjustment there.
I just needed another set of eyeballs to look thru

I am in no position to critique, but I can admire. I especially like the santa. That's a great piece.

Did you make the pattern? roughout? (OK, I'll fess-up, I wanna do one like that!)

Nice, thanks for sharing!

I got it from the Hobby Lobby for 3$. I'd be happy to send it to you!
The cowboy picture I got off one of them air freshners you hang from your rear view.
I carved on the cowboys hat for awhile lastnight. Can't believe the trouble I'm hav'n with that thing. For some reason I had this notion that if I could carve eyes, nose and ears, the rest of the world would just fall in my lap...not
