Default A request from a total beginner

Hello people!

Truly glad to see that there is a forum dedicated to the wood carving.

I am a total beginner, better said I am in the stage when I look for buying some tools and a piece of wood! Also a book would be good or some DVD, no idea.

However, I would appreciate your advice.

So...I want to chip carve in relief, also to chip carve little crosses like this one: http://www.iconastas.co.uk/docs/KIF_1137(1).jpg

Now, I saw woodcraft.com They have some knives, I saw Pfeil etc.

I have NO idea from where to begin. But I guess I need some tools, some for sharpening, a piece of wood, a tutorial.

Can you recommend me some things with which I could begin?

Thank you much, people. Apologizes for my English, it is not my native language, I live somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Go to Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply Rick and Theresa will get you set up. Rick has a beginner's kit which is very reasonably priced and the tools come SHARP! It also includes a strop and safety equipment. They also carry a good variety of books to get you started.

If your main interst is doing crosses like the one illustrated. The entire thing can be done with a chip carving knife. In fact it is probably best done with that single tool.
