| | Replica Ship Building Hey there. I used to do a lot of wood carving in high school dragons and stuf mostly. and now that i am out of college and have free time again, I was looking to get into wooden ship building. wooden spanish galleons, that kind of thing.
Any one here know of any good books, or online resources to help me get started in this? I have one book i bought in high school that shows to build a ship called the "skip jack", a flatbottom fishing sail boat. but its not really want i want right now.
Again I ask, any ideas? The only stuff I can find is jsut sites selling ready built models, or kits. I want to do it by hand, the hard way
Thanks a bunch guys!

| | Re: Replica Ship Building Jody,
Welcome! You're in for a big surprise! We have a Fellow on here named Bob, he goes by Squbrigg, who builds the most incredible ships! And he'll help you in any way he can, and that will be many! You could go to the top of the Forum page and figure out contacting him/searching for him, but he'll catch up with you pretty quick here.
Have fun--I know you're going to!

| | Re: Replica Ship Building "TweeeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeeeTTT!!" Bosuns mate, pipe this new shipmate into our group. Welcome aboard Jody Lang, we hope you will be snug and happy here. You have come to the right place, me thinks.......as my maties have suggested, I may be able to make your venture a bit easier for you. I have been building scratch wooden ship models since my own Navy days and would be happy to help. (I had a messmate by the name of Lang, he was a killick in our mess {leading seaman} and was forever getting into trouble, especially with the ladies in foreign ports, but we wouldn't go there, will we! Ah, the stories I could tell you about that lad!!!)
Now to work. A good book for you to begin with is available here at Fox Chapel, it's called "Historic Ship Models" by Wolfram zu Mondfeld. It is very reasonably priced. They have two more there that I would also recommend, both by Charles Davis, "Ship Models and How to Build Them" and "The Built Up Ship Model", both inexpensive and very useful. Like you, I don't care for kits. A lot of money wasted, and you can do better from scratch. BOBD....send this lad a catalogue!
You want to build a Galleon.....okay, that is an ambitious first model, but if you have your heart set on it and are motivated, we can get you started. The Mondfeld book has a small plan for a English Galleon that might fit the bill, so you don't have to go looking for a specific plan for a Spanish one. But if you have a specific ship in mind, we'll try to accomodate you.
What do you have in the way of tools? You wouldn't need much to get started, trust me, you can spend a lot over time, but you don't need them to begin. Materials, we will be able to direct you to everything you will need, material for the hull, decks, bulwarks, masts and spars, and to either make the fittings yourself or purchase ready made ones.
This will do for a first post, but relax, get the book(s) and we'll get started. I have lots of time, lots of experience, and am happy to give you a hand. You will never regret making the leap into the world of ship modelling.

| | Re: Replica Ship Building Bob,
You must have been in a different Navy than I was! They never piped me aboard the Sub I was on, and the two guys I had to share a bunk with (one of us at a time of course) never said, "we hope you will be snug and happy here!" Canadian sailors must be a happy lot!
Jody,
Did I tell you you've come to the right place? Again, welcome!
