Default Relief Carving Warped

I carved a relief carving for someone out of 1/4" basswood. When I went to paint it the wood warped and the paint "seeped" into areas where I didn't want it. Is there a way to save it or do I start all over?

I carved several 5 x 7 x 1/4 " low relief and after painting washs on it, it warped. Iput weight on them and allowed to dry. Pretty much back to their original flatness.

The next time you try that thin of a piece, seal it front and back first. But that pretty well eliminates using washes on it.

Really thin acrylic washes. I wanted to grain to show through so it would look like wood not painted plastic.

I'm going to lay it flat and use a weight to flatten it while it dries. I may have to go over the whole thing with opaque white just to get it back to a paintable surface. I'll see after it dries.
