Ok, I bought the beginners kit from Lil Shavers for my 10 year old for Christmas and was going to start her working on some very simple relief carving. What would be th ebest wood white pine or bass? If any one has a good patterns please share.. Thanks. |

Hello. I think basswood is the best choice for wood. You can find patterns at Woodcarving Patterns, Classic Carving Patterns Online, Wood Carving Designs and Patterns Online. There are some great choices there.

Started a grand daughter when she was nine. Used Little Shavers beginners set too. Made a smaller bench hook, and used 1/4th inch birch plywood for the relief type carvings. Her mom and I both quilt so I had grand daughter make three inch quilt squares. Started out by drawing simple four patch squares. All "lines" were straight and cut with a V-Tool to the same depth. After some of the four patch squares were done we moved onto more complicated quilt squares. Any quilting book or magazine has lots of patterns to copy. After carving she painted the squares and attached a small magnetic strip to the back. Some interesting larger quilt designs were next created on the front of the refrigerator, using the individual squares. She enjoyed the projects and many were made into Christmas tree ornaments too.
