sorry to hear your not able to start carving, think i would go nuts if i couldnt make a mess occasionaly....
hang in there, maybe practice with clay, its something i started recently and it is nearly as sadisfying, maybe sculpy would be more for you, as you can bake in oven at low temp and keep your project.
Ill try to see if i can find that book localy,
i have got to stop and catch up reading some of these books ive just bought lately.
carving the female face
art of cartooning,
carving the full moon saloon
wci magizine and creative woodworkers craft. and 2 scrollsaw mags,
and found
fun with a pencil, loomis book. at the library.
I Been working some more on the teaching stick,
its not all done to my likings, so i been working on it as i experimen with my old digital camera and have been posting on a blog, not knowing anything about bloggs, or if ill even maintain it after this project, heres the link http://thompsblog.blogspot.com/ look in the feburary archive listed on right side of the blog

I DO carve but I had to teach myself everything from scratch, as I said from "Seeing" not just looking, I have done well as my ribbons on the wall tell me, so really what I meant was, one does not need classes or teachingsticks etc, if you want to learn you will no matter what the circumstances are,as you can se in the picture

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks Troll, those are the best pictures of study sticks I have seen. Great photography work! They are clear enough I think even I can see the steps!
Thanks, a great help for this beginner without resources readily available in person!

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks most of has been approached by an interested child or adult by now,
If that child asked, "how did you carve that horse?"
In the presents of other folks listening, it would be funny if we replied in our best Jed clampit voice. "ya just cut away everything that aint a horse!",
but it wouldn't help the child.
Although the child might be capable to draw a horse, transferring it to 3d image in their minds, might be a thing that they were incapable of . by aiding this child to sculpt or carve you might be unlocking hidden abilities,
art perception and appreciation is not something we are all blessed with equally,
I hear it all the time, "I cant draw a straight line". most didnt practice to draw a line. its a practiced skill.
some artists can switch mediums easily,
sketching and painting are linked,
while carving and sculpting are linked commonly, but when switching from flat 2d media to 3d media,
you cant just draw another shadow to make the ear pop out on the wood. you got to remove layers.
reintroducing carving sticks to the learning tradition, passed down from skilled carvers to benefit beginning carvers early on, is just a head start in seeing how to accomplish the steps involved in removing the layers,
the art appreication will come as they become awair of good art and great art. |
