| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks kathy, thats exactly my problem ... if i could draw it , im sure i could make a dang good attempt at carving it out... but the pencle dont turn the way it should always.
i usualy pencilmark while ive started carving, using the idea in my head,
pencil marks are for centerlines and keeping things even from left to right.
i dont follow this rule always, that why whiskery pete on my pictrail had his arm comming out of his ear nearly but through the shirt collar on the right side.
people are nice and havent said anything about it yet. |

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks If drawing is a problem, you might want to check out a book by Andrew Loomis, "How to Draw, The Head and Hands"(out of print author passed on) in this book he comes as close to showing you how to carve hands as any how to draw book I've ever seen, he blocks the hand out as though it were for carving instructions.
The book is available on the internet sometimes free to download, it's also on eBay for big bucks.
Another book that is very cheaply priced is Ivan Whillock's " Hand Proportions made Simple", includes sketches and carving instructions.
Ivan is a well known sculptor of wood.

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks loomis is a great teacher i found a site called "save Lomis" where the book was online got refenced it many times but not lately.. Im gonna get that book if i can get my hands on it one day..
--
i dont know what my biggest problem is when it comes to detail drawings, and hands, 'artists block i guess',
--
another might be tools,
by limiting myself to a chip knife and 1/4 &1/8" palm gouge its rough to put it in wood sometimes. and my carvings are small when rated to others, 1x1x3" and 2x2x3" mostly so details get micro..
talked to rick-in-seattle on the subject of dockyard micro gouges he sells,
and im gonna get the 60000 set 5mm to 1.5mm gouges,
another thing i found that might aid is art studys posable hand mannequins http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...1&d=1139597366
located at : http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discou...art-supplies/3
thanks for the info |

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks i found loomis books years ago online, havent ever had one inmy hands but from what i seen online he was a card,
his teachings looked to be straight forward, like it should be second nature to anyone.
i found some of his books in pdf format on pinewire but there seams to be some controversy if their in public domain yet or not. |

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks After reading your post, I asked one of the masters, at the carving club I just started attending, if there were any available. I was sitting trying to make a copy of a home made stick to send to my son when all of a sudden the master plopped down an arm load of the things on the table in front of me and said "we have a few, ... have at it". How cool is that!? I really like the links provided by everyone and have found it very useful. Maybe the boss could make this thread into a sticky
I couldn't find the CRV_EARS page but di find the home page. http://members.tripod.com/TheCarvingBench/

| | Re: reintroduction of teaching sticks How to Draw?
there is this book called "Drawing with the right side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards and it is study which makes so much sense and it is easy to follow.
How to carve?
look in to the mirror and see your face ( really see it) or any of the people around you and "Copy " of what you see.I have had no chance of learning how to carve ,it is where I live
but one learns from seeing and doing.
