Hi everyone I just finished a carving on some aspen. I also included a detail knife I made as per instructions I found on this site. Thanks for all of your info and pics they have been very helpful. Especially, the knife making instructions I found here and elsewhere. I never really thought I could make my own knives and it certainly opened up some doors for me.

May I make a suggestion, based upon a fault of my own? Much more dramatic relief and undercutting. I know it sounds a little absurd but your profile of a dandelion is very good, you have that part 100% but it needs to be " brought out" a little more. I do the relief carving. Think it looks OK. Do it all again 2X deeper, more undercuts . . . . looks like my head thought it should look. |

Thanks for your good advice. I'll be thinking about what you said on the next one. Don't think I'll do another dandelion though. I'm full up on dandelion.

Hi there, and welcome to WCI and the Boards I think for a first effort in relief and knife making you have done very well. With each new relief or carving you will create you will get better and better. Getting the depth in relief carving is all part of the technique and creates dimension. Undercutting creates shadow which also adds to the look of dimension too. Keep your cuts clean of which it appears that you did. So you are well on your way!

Great job on the carving. I think it looks great but if you want it to pop you can either carve deeper or use a dry brushed stain after sealing it with shellac. The stain catches around the carving giving it more dimension, also breaks up the light reflections that sometimes "burn" out carvings. Not an easy subject either, I understand what you mean by being "full". Stave |
