Default Ready to take the carving plung, but...

Hello. This is my first post in this forum. I have recently decided to begin this amazing art of wood carving. I have a fine arts background in painting and drawing, but unfortunately never took advantage of the woodworking classes offered in undergrad. I have now developed a huge desire to begin carving. I am primarily interested in power carving right now (though that could change I guess).
So, my main roadblock is what brand of tool to purchase. I have been looking at a Dremel tool (8200). I have read negative comments regarding these tools and their use for carving, but I have also seen very positive reviews.

I do not want to buy junk (even for my first tool). I want it to last so my kids can use it to if they choose to down the road. Another draw of the Dremel is its versatility. It is like a swiss army knife of rotary tools.

Anyway, I would very much appreciate some recommendations/advice on a first power tool for carving. Please specify details about accessories, attachments, burrs, etc. I am a complete newbee and want to get some decent stuff without getting ripped off or buying what I do not really need. Please recommend books as well.

I am really excited about this new found hobby (let's hope there's some new found time as well) and cannot wait to learn a lot from this forum.

THANKS!

Welcome to the forum!
Your best bet for power carving info is to go to the Power Carving Forum here Power Carving - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board and read the posts already there. Lots of recommendations, good and bad points, etc.
