Default Question on Doing the bowl on wooden spoons

Hi I'm making some wooden spoons.I have scroll sawed them out of walnut wood. And i'm sanding them down and in to shape by using My Dremel tool and also by hand. I have yet to do the bowl areas of these spoons. Cause I 'm kind of stuck on knowing what to use to carve the bowl area out. I would like to use My Dreamel tool to do this if i can,But I don't know what attachments to use in the Dremel tool to get the job done. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hi, and welcome, the more spoonmakers the better, and there are quite a few on board. I'm fairly new at it myself but sure do enjoy making something that is functional as well as artistic. Personally I use a Kutzall 3/4 inch sphere to hollow the bowl, I have a Wecheer machine that really chews the wood up in a hurry, from time to time I also use my dremel flex shaft. I'm quite sure you can buy the sphere from Kutzall with the 1/8 shaft to fit you're dremel. When finished of course you will have some sanding to do (did I say some) I mean a lot of sanding to do. I bought the kirjes sanding ball and drum sanders they are inflatable so you have to buy the little pump that is available for them. To my way of thinking they are the greatest invention since sliced bread. Good luck and I hope to see some pictures of your work in the future.

I carve my spoons with either bent spoon carving knives or with gouges, I did just order my self a guinevere inflatable sanding ball thing. It look like it will help with the sanding inside the bowl which by hand is a pain unless your carving with power.

It is probably an elementary point, but you will rough up the grain less if you work from the ends of the spoon bowl toward the center. This is essential if using gouges.

Mark Yundt showed us some photos of spoon bowl carving with regular gouges a few months back. I don't have the reference right now, but someone may have bookmarked it.

Those kutzall spheres are great for that job. I'm working on a slab of sycamore trying to make an ale hen. This wood is hard and not easily carved but the kutzall eats it up. However, I found my Welcher did not take the strain of the sphere. Broke two cables trying. The answer was a heavy hand drill.
Hope helps.
