Default Quality Tools

Right now since I am only a beginner I am only buying okay tools. Eventually I will upgrade to high quality tools. These are what I have now/about to buy.

Hook Knife- Hook Knife - Lee Valley Tools
Spokeshave- Contour Planes - Lee Valley Tools

When the time comes to upgrade to higher quality tools I want to know what to get. Can someone recommend me high quality spoon carving tools and any other tools I should get?

Denny knives and gouges are also a good caliber of tool. I've looked at that Frost hook knife you linked to, but ended up getting the Denny spoon gouge for making spoons. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I'm going to disagree with you about buying just "OK" tools. If you are going to spend the money, get the best tools you can. You may have to accumulate them at a slower rate but you will get them eventually. I've hated a low quality tool I've purchased but I have never regretted buying a quality tool. That being said Lee Valley has very good quality tools. Rick Weib has good prices on Pfeil tools if you are interested.

They aren't bad quality at all but there are better tools than what I have. Both of those tools are lee valley tools so they aren't bad at all. There is a company I found while looking around for good quality tools and I am sure it's hook knives are very good quality. What are your opinions of the best manufacturers of the best spokeshaves and hook knife/gouge?

I have done some research and found quite a few companies who seem to make good tools.

SpokeshavesHook knife/spoon gougeAre there other companies that make good quality spoon making tools? Also which of these is the best?

Thanks

The hook knife you link to from Lee Valley is a Frost (Sweden) knife that is sold by many woodcarving suppliers. Frost knives are good quality steel and hold an edge well. I have the Frost 120 Mora that came super sharp and has held an edge with only an occasional stropping since I bought it.

Another source to look at is Dell Stubbs' knives at Pinewood Forge Scandinavian Knives

I might get one of their deep hollowing tools or the 1 3/4in hook knife. Would the hollowing tool be better to add to my collection of tools?
