Default Projects so far....

Hi All,

So I received a Flexcut carving knife and a big box of basswood (from Rockler) for Christmas and started whittling away. Here's some of my projects I've completed so far. Not all of them are show as there's a few cut off beaks, noses, balls OUT of cage, etc, ha! I got the idea for the little carving lap bench from Tom H @ Beginners Carving Corner and Beyond (note to other newbies this is a great site to check out) and it has worked out very good. Oh well just wanted to share and to thank everyone that contributes to this forum and you tube as I've gotten a much help, support and ideas. Cheers. //bluegoose//

Looks like you're off to a good start...just keep at it and don't get discouraged. I really like the comfort bird you did.

Thank you. I don't have a bandsaw so I carved the Comfort Bird down from a 2x2 block. Was a bit of work but enjoyable just the same and I learned quite a bit about wood grain. Once I get it sanded down and smooth, I think it will be pretty nice. Cheers. //bluegoose//

very nice! I'm just starting out as well and thinking about making one of those lap trays. Looks like you're a couple of steps ahead of me haha

How do you collect your chips? I noticed yours isn't boxed in like Tom's.

Hi sillygnome,

I just push the chips to the center and then scoop them up and into a little trash when they start getting in the way.. The chips that fall off to the side I usually just vacuum them up later. I do need to figure out a better way as I do seem to be getting chips all over the place. Good luck with yours and let me know if you figure out a better way to catch chips!! Cheers. //bluegoose//

I've read in some other threads people putting an old sheet down under their station and covering their laps. they just pick up the sheet with the chips and dump it when their done.

every time I vacuum up my floor I find more chips not 5 minutes later in the same spot! I think my gnomes are carving themselves....
