Default A problem

I was doing a peircing on my wood spirit when I slipped with the knife and cut through it. So now I have a gap about the width of a knife blade. Should I fill it with wood putty? Leave it alone or trim it some more so it looks like I meant to do it? The first image is the cut. The second shows a red box on the mustache where the peircing is. The third is the WIP.

Thanks
Chris

When handed lemons make lemonade! Looks like a happy mistake to me. I'd leave it alone. Once you apply a finish it may not even be noticable!

I'm with Hi Ho and Eddy, Chris.....I think you should just leave it alone and put your finish on it...it's a wonderful carving and I would just pass it off as part of the wood piece you used.

several good suggestions, already posted,,
to add 2 more cents,

You could put some elmers on a wood chip and slide it in the crack snug fit and wait for the glue to dry completely, then trim off excess,

it may still be noticeable still though,

the gel type CA super glue might fill the crack if you put some on the back side,

never the less,
you might loose the whole strand cleaning up the fix because the glues are harder than wood, it may crack above if you attempt to fix it,

another idea cut off the strand, i dont think it would be missed that much,,

final answer leave it alone,, it just dont look that bad,, like said in previous post it might seal up with the finish and paint if you leave it a little heavy,,

Leave it alone. It looks good and will never be noticed.

I just really like the carving. No suggestions for the split, because to me, it looks intentional other than you pointing it out, and maybe making that strand a bit more fragile.
I just really like the caring... really nice nose.

I probably should have kept the sliver I pulled out . When I first cut through it there wasn't a gap. I figured the shellac I'm going to use to finish it would probably act like a light glue. But as I continued working on it I noticed the loose sliver and removed it. If I had turned the carving when I took the photo you would see the gap.The photo of the mustache doesn't really show it cause its behind another part.

Thanks
Chris
