Default Preparing a Trunk for Carving

I have about a 5'diam. 10' tall maple stump that I'm going to carve. What do I need to do to prepare the stump so as to minimize rot over th years, insect damage etc. thank you.I need urgent help cos i would like to give this as a gift to a friend.

is it soft or hard maple? if its soft- i think this will be temporary yard art
