So I started carving with a knife a while back, and think it's fantastic. I haven't gotten to do too much yet, I find myself busy with other things, but I've sure got some wood spirits and a lot of shavings. I recently got a Dremel 3000 and a Black & Decker flexshaft, so I'm trying to branch into power carving as well. The thing that's bumming me out is that I can't find the same sorts of introductory videos for power carving as I found for knife carving. With a knife, there are videos all over youtube where a guy can see somebody actively carving. learn about cuts and things you can do with the knife, watch the movements, learn how it's done. For power carving with a rotary tool, all I can find is a bunch of slideshows and such, none of which seem to be aimed toward the carver who has no idea what he's doing. I've been playing around a bit on my own, but heck, I don't even know what the bits I have are supposed to do. I'd also love to visit the local woodcarving club, but my schedule's pretty tight when they meet, so that's no guarantee. Do all y'all know of any of these sorts of videos that I could look at? I'd be happy to support other carvers and buy some dvds, but I'm already pretty heavily invested after buying these tools, and I haven't got much to show for it yet, so I can't really justify spending more money for a while. That's a married student budget for ya. |

Try searching for "Sanding Drum Santa" on YouTube. There's a nice series of hands-on tutorials using a dremel to carve a wall-hanging Christmas ornament.

I'd second the recomendation for Frank Russell's video. It is well worth the money. It covers everything a beginner would need to get started plus techniques for even the advanced carver. He even includes patterns for the rabbit which is the first project he covers. Don Holsinger |
