Wow Doc that is quite a system. Thank you. I am still using my respirator and shield. I may get into a system like yours, down the line looks like a plan! Phyllis |

Hi Phyllis, I thought you might be interested in this. WWWoodc@rver E-zine, Volume3 Issue3, May 1999 The author says there is enough suction that he doesn't have to wear a face mask. With this system ande your mask, you can't go wrong. Here is another system you can build. Silent Dust Collector Plans- Fish Carving Classes

Hi Phyllis, Good luck with your quest for relief from the dust. Take notice, that there is a lot of saw dust laying all over the vacs used in Doc's system. I noticed that my own vac passes a lot of really fine dust through the vacuum unless you spring for a really good filter to help trap it inside the vac, otherwise you need to put a hose on the exhaust side and run it outside. I finally got one that will trap sheetrock sanding dust and I can tell the difference in how it works. I noticed it when my wife was using the vac & I could see the dust going out the exhaust all over what she had just vacuumed!!

Thank you Terry, Yes now that you mention it that is true. I'm still using my respirator and shield. I am so used to it from my glass etching business that it isn't a problem. I just want to check out the alternatives, Phyllis

Hi Phyllis, The problem with a mask only system is that your power tools are filling the air with microsocpic, less than 5 micron sized particles. Once you take the mask off you are still going to be exposed to this tiny dust that remains suspended in the air. In fact, if you're carving in your house, your furnace cold/hot air runs may be spreading these particles to everyone in the house. The tiny ones are the most unhealthy size. There has been some excellent research done by a fellow by the name of Bill Pentz, he has a web page and he isn't selling anything. BillPentz.com. I am not associated with him in any way. I was researching dust collection on the web and came across his site. I have lost a lung as a result of shop dust so I take this topic seriously. I'd encourage all wood workers to read his web pages. Most, not all, of the dust collectors that are talked about on this forum are "dust pumps" because they don't filter particles down to 5 microns. They appear to use 4" collection hoses, instead of 6" hoses that have enough volume to pick up the microscopic particles. This is not my opinion, I'm just telling you what the research from John Hopkins and Bill Pentz reports. Last edited by TroutScout; 03-26-2009 at 10:11 PM. |

Thank you Troutscout, I appreciate the info. After having a glass etching business I take all dust seriously and agree with everything you said. Thanks for the tip on Bill. Phyllis |
