Bill,

There's a ton of threads on the board about pocket knives, and If I'm not much mistaken there is an article being put together for an upcoming WCI mag issue.

The short answer is that a regular pocket knife can be modified to make a suitable carving knife. There are also pocket knives made specifically for carving. They tend to be a bit pricey. The one I use, the Flexcut Carvin' Jack, has small gouge blades as well as the carving blade. I like it a lot and it is usually in my pocket for when the urge hits and I'm not in my little workshop. The biggest drawback is $$$. At over a hundred you can buy a handful of pocket knives to make your own.

Woodcraft has a couple made by Sarge, I think they are about $20-25

I am shopping for one of the carving jacks currently. I am patient.. when I find one on sale I am going to put in an order. That knife seems to have alot of good reviews.

I have a carving jack and I love the gouges but the main blade had way to steep of a bevel and was not all that sharp. But once it was reshaped it cut great.

There are many "pocket knives" made specifically for carving. You can find a decent three blade whittler starting at under 20 bucks up to over 100. Without doing any surgery to the blades a good whittler will come with a long clip point blade a shorter clip or drop point and one either sheepsfoot or coping blade. Many carvers then modify these blades to better suit their purposes.

A "whittler" or a "congerss" knife will make good pocket whittlers just as they are. But most will need a good sharpening before they can be used effectively for woodcarving.

This is a picture of an old Boy Scout style 3 blade whittler. One like this needs no mods. I believe Camilus made these but don't know who makes them now. They are still available from the Scout Supply office at www.scoutstuff.com under camping and then knives

OOOPS, looks like they are out of stock untill mid-June

they are probably out of stock because they are waiting on a shipment from china,it is a shame that boy scout knives are made in china these days.
