Please recommend beginners set

Could y'all please recommend a beginner's carving set for a 12 year old? My son has asked for a wood carving knife for Christmas and I really don't know where to begin.

Wherever you buy the knife, be sure to purchase a carving glove also.

Decent carving tools are going to have to be purchased from a store who spcializes in wood working or wood carving.
Little shavers has the best beginner kit I have seen at a reasonable price. You will probably have to order it though unless you live near Seattle.

It contains a knife, a carving glove to prevent cutting your hand wide open, a strop to sharpen the knife, and a couple of gouges.
If you just buy an inexpensive but decent carving knife, you will still need to buy a carving glove and a strop.

You are not going to find anything half decent at Wal Mart, Home Depote, Hobby Lobby or any stores like that.

My advice is to go to the Little shavers web site and click on beginner set
Think he is selling it for around $35 and a knife, a glove, a strop, and stropping compound usually cost more than that.

Not only is Rick's set a good deal, but the tools you buy from him come sharp! And contrary to what the inexperienced may think, a sharp tool is a safer tool.

I have a son who just turned 13. This past summer, I spent closer to $50 for tools similar to what Rick is selling. I wish I'd known about Rick's starter set before I did.

Oh well, live and learn!

Based on what I have seen, you really can't go wrong with Little Shavers. Â*You can also get support from this board as he progresses! Â*

If you want to 'shop' around, try WoodCraft as suggested or try Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers. Â*They are located in Eastern Tennesse and have a beginners package. Â*They are located on the Web also (www.woodcarvers.com).

LittleShavers's biginners Kit. Great kit for a beginner. Actually, What I have seen of Little Sahvers online catalog, Great tools and prices and he will make the tools sharpe.

If I was buying a beginner kit, it would definitely be the 1 from Little Shavers.
Smokey mountain has a beginner kit but not near as good
and less items and more expensive.
I bought an inexpensive carving knife from Woodcraft last year and paid about $12 plus $20 carving glove plus around $10 fo a strop. so Rick's kit is the beyyer value.

Hi Josie,

That is nice to hear, perhaps you also might like to check out carving clubs in your area and 'take' him to a meeting. Great way for father and son, mother and son, or father and mother and son or daughter to spend some great time together

If you aren't a carver, it might also encourage him more by seeing that his dad is willing to spend time learning along with him. It is a great hobby and very relaxing. It will sustain you and your son all of your lives.
