I found this how-to web page for making a blade protector on the Pinewood Forge web site. www.pinewoodforge.com Following the suggestion I used cardboard from a cereal box, instead of bark from a birch tree, and was able to fashion a protector for a knife. The steps are easy, the design works well, and it was inexpensive. It seems a good fit for the form-follows-function, simple but elegant, handcrafted crowd. Next time I might use the Frosted Flakes box for the flashy colors and leave the colors exposed. For a beginner, it works for me. But I must confess I do like the protectors from little shavers for my palm tools. Doug Last edited by AlArchie; 10-12-2005 at 08:55 AM. Reason: correcting double http error |

Doug entered a double http header on his link... I corrected it, but for some reason the change doesn't come up a "link", so I just enterted the primary site's URL...Scroll down to the "Birch Exhibit and Sheath Making" link and it will open..sorry Doug, I couldn't get the ful "link" to work properly, but at least now we can get there. Al, It works now--sometimes it takes a few minutes for the changes to populate the database we use for the forum. Bob |

Thanks for the assist. I "previewed" the post last night and it looked like the link was OK but I did not actually use it. Will be more thorough next time. Doug |

I have made birch bark sheaths for several of my knives including three of my carving knives and my de-barking knife using this technique. I learned it years ago in cub scouts. I hadn't thought of using cereal box cardboard and would suppose that posterboard would work too. If using birch bark be sure it is fresh or well soaked to prevent cracking. |
