I like Pete's books too. He makes it easy to adjust the expressions to make the carving your own, not just a copy. I got the one on carving heads for Christmas.

both..... ahhh all three of his books show you how to carve faces.............. all different. after you master the how he does it ....change the look to your look. your your style ....but first learn how to carve his faces. his method. which works .

I started out with Pete's book , then got Marv's book and kinda mixed the two by what I thought was easier, Then I got Jeff Phares book now I'm using a mixture of all of them. But Pete's and Marv's both get you on the right track to making the basic cuts to get the face foundation started , then it's just practice to get it like you like it. Good luck and carving.

marty,

it doesnt matter which one you start with but if you are a beginner i may suggest the carving caricature heads or the carving from scratch book, and save the bust book after you have done a few of the others,

I think you would do well with "Carving Caricature Figures From Scratch". Mr Leclair starts out on the head, moves to the figure, then goes back and finishes the head. Then on to painting, his way. And all this is with a block of wood. No bandsaw required. It is a pretty good book. Your first carving from the book may be OK but I think each time you go thru the book you will pick up more understanding. It worked for me.
