Smile Paying forward when you recieve

One day about 5 , 6 years ago I got to talking to one of my customers, later, friend who has sinced passed about woodcarving. We talked several times. One day sometime after I had admired his work at a local Carving Show, he showed up with a small gift kind of a Thankyou, for somethings I had done for him, in it was my first boot project, finger guard, & a homemade carving knife. It was my start & still very much enjoy my hobby.
My point in telling this is many times someone is willing to share or help ex:beginner pocket knife questions How about taking it up a notch to those who have been shared with.
Personally I given a number of knifes & or projects to new carvers! What do you think? GOOD Job ED!

Brian D,

very good point and I agree w/ your kudos to Ed.

A guy standing in line behind me began talking and asking about my cane. I said I made it, you could tell it was home made, kind of pathetic , my first one. He invited me to his RV to see his sticks. Magnificent Diamond Willows. He ended up giving me several "practice" sticks.

My wife and I would drive down there twice during the snowbid season to visit them. Anyway, I made about fiteen of my "scoop" blade/knives, and gave them to him to give to his friends. What goes around comes around.

Good Job! Ron . I know most carvers without thinking are this way, it just would be nice if others picked up on it.

Well Brian D, I'm just glad there are so many carvers out there because you're right, many are that way.

I think the "New Age" buzz word is "Random Act Of Kindness" but all it boils down to is an extension of the "Golden Rule", "treat others as you'd want to be treated." With the exception of the occasional item that my wife takes a fancy to I give away 100% of all that I carve. I've been critized a number of times by folks who say that I'm taking money away from other artists by doing this. Well in the first place I don't consider myself an artist and in the second place nothing gives me more satisfaction than seeing the pleasure on the faces of those that recieve a carving or a cane that I make. Besides that it's my hope that it will spur the receipient on to want to do their own carving much like the way I got started. You're right Brian. Too many carvers have too many projects just sitting around the house just colllecting dust. We can't take them with us and guess where they're going when we head off to the great beyond! What better way to spread the word of carving than to share our work with others here and now while we can...

I can relate to this. I give most of my carvings to my 87 year old grandmother, who spends her day sitting in her chair watching tv. She greets each new carving with enthusiasm and praise, which I think is good for both of us. Besides I like to think I'm a creator not a collector.
