Default pattern transfer

I have ordered the beginners set and a beginners book from Rick, and was hoping to gather some info beforehand....

Most of the patterns I have seen are only a top profile, few seem to have a side profile,

1. what is best way to xfer the pattern to the wood, keep in mind I can't draw, sketch or draw good stick people

2. do you bandsaw out the profile and carve detail from there, and how with only the top do you get a side profile...I scrollsaw patterns, and cut out, but have a top and side view and cut out...

eagerly awaiting package from Rick...thanks so much for the input...great and informative group...Dennis

do you only xfer the top of the pattern and cut it out?....and then visualize the sides and back?....could be tough for me......I have some a few of the patterns in the WCI last issue, it was a small wolf, with a front/back/side and some with only the front.....Dennis

not being the artist one, worried about pattern xfer to the wood, I don't see the need to transfer all the elements, but for me, it will take several in order to make the wood look like a something.....

does anyone have a few small patterns, I could use to begin the learning curve?....tks...Dennis

Hello Dennis,
If you will send me your snail mail addy in a private message (you do that by clicking on my name) I'll send you a santa pattern (7-8" tall) that has both sides of the pattern. I'll look for a simple critter pattern that has both profiles and I'll include it, too.

When I'm cutting out a pattern, I like to photocopy the two views and just use spray adhesive to fix them to the wood. I cut the first profile view, then I put the waste stock back where it came off, use masking tape to hold it there, and then cut the other profile. By putting the waste piece back on, you will have a good flat surface that will stablize your wood block so cutting the other side will be easier. Also, be sure to cut outside the line instead of inside the lines so that you'll have plenty of wood left to develop the carving I hope the process makes sense--goodness knows nothing else I've said this evening made sense!!!

Heres' a couple patterns you are free to use......blow them up to whatever size suits your needs.

First is a roller bear. A pretty simple carving, and when you are done, if you balance him on his nose and front feet, then give a gentle forward push, he will do a sommersault and come to rest standing on all fours. don't have a clue who came up with this idea, but one of our club members drew the pattern and it has become prettymuch public domain around here.

Second is one of my designs...."Witch Hazel".. broom and bootas are carved separately and glued in place after painting. Here's Hazel, finished....bit fuzzydue to downsizing.

If you want full size patterns, get me your email addy and I'll send them off.

Have at it!

Al
