Seems like we just had a thread on this, but I could not find it. If I do find it, I'll merge the two. {Edit: The other thread was by carvedbears61 a week or so ago, but was more about generating ideas...this is more about how to get those ideas into a pattern. We can keep them separate.} It may be best to ask this question on a thread (about a specific carving) that's already started. That way there's something to reference. (PS - typing in CAPS generally indicates yelling and turns many readers "off"). Last edited by Mitchell; 02-03-2007 at 01:11 PM. |

Well, here's a thread that's a little older, but about the same thing. I'll just link it for now. From conception to pattern And here's another relates very well also: Does your carving end up as you planned. Note that I used the Search function with the key words "creating pattern idea" |

I was funnin' a bit.... Actually, the question is a good one - so good in fact, that you may not get a good descriptive answer. Many carvers only use patterns with one side. Especially when making a 'new' design. Tom Wolfe is notorious for only having one view to patterns in his books. |

I'm thinking i have understood the question here to be simply where do you start making a pattern??this has been discussed before but i couldn't find it Start by doing a Google image search for the item you want lets say "teddy bear" find what you want or take a picture of what you want. do your best to re-size it to the size you want to carve and print it out. quality dont matter as your going for outside shape mainly.. method 1 you may have to improvise to make the side view, so drawing horizontal reference lines across the printed page will aid in keeping features aligned in front and side view, or print it out on graph paper... use your knowledge, knowing the nose is most forward on the head and ears will be some what to the back of the center of the head then the back of the head will define the rear vertical limit of the side view, find out if the nose or pot belly is the other vertical limit to the front of the side view,, try to keep some realistic scale then continue drawing vertical lines align the top of the head in both views Along with the tip of the nose, eyes & chin arms paws, fork in the legs knees and feet from view to view..etc.. use the reference lines and sketch the side view until your satisfied with the shapes, then fold in a straight line between the front and side views and attach the fold over a corner edge of a block of wood you intend to carve, tape it down securely with clear package tape and using a band saw, scroll saw, or coping saw to follow one view all the way around the pattern. re attach all scraps to make as solid of block as possible then secure with packaging tape again.. roll the block to the uncut view and cut out, when finished you will have a rough cut out.. method 2 use your 2 view pattern, and trace the outside lines directly on your stock with a pencil, then with knives and chisels remove all the stock outside the pattern lines,,, continually keep redrawing the pattern or highlights while removing stock so you dont forget, like the stock in front of the eye has to be removed, but you need to leave stock for the nose, mouth mound etc. try the pattern attached

Thank you for the help. I'll have to read this post a few more time to grasp this because I'm still a newbie. Again many thanks.
