Default painting incised letters

I must be using the wrong type of paint
i'm carving signs i painted the flat first
then with different color for the incised
letters. the paint dries before i can wipe
off the edges around the letter owe by
the way i'm using latex paint exteror.

John,
When I do signs the flat is the darker color. So, I do the letters first.
Its much easier to use a broad brush to get to the edge of the letters. Also have use both latex and alydkyd.
IMHO

I use oil base 1 Shot sign paint on all my signs. Paint the entire sign with the base color than come back and do the letters. If you know the sign is going to be in a place where moisture is an issue I coat the sign with West System Epoxy first and then paint it. Most of the lettering I do is gold leafed and than I pinstripe around the gold letters. 1 Shot sign paint is the best paint out there for signs.

Woodbutcher,

What kind of wood do you use for your quarterboards? and Where do you purchase it?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter, I use Honduras Mahogany for most of my signs. It carves easy and holds detail well. The finish is clasic for boat sign. We have a custom lumber yard in town were you can buy just about every type of wood there is. Boat builders also have a good supply. I have carved signs out of clear white pine but the detail is not the same and you have to stain it to look like mahogany.
