Default To paint or not to paint a perennial quandry

I have been working on this off and on for quite a while. I have finally called it quits, It is intended for my daughter (a seventh grade spanish teacher, can you guess). By the way it is about 6" square.
I planned on painting it and then lettering as I have "pasted" on the photo, but now I wonder. The tack and the apple are kind of hidden unpaited, so would a very light wash technique be better.
Most of my relief work I have painted in bright acrylic creamcoat paints and flesh is usually a problem, since toning is not a skill I have developed yet.
Robert mentioned I forgot the type of wood, I believe its basswood. "I believe"-huh ? Well I like to use found wood when I can and this came in box of mostly basswood and a similar low grain wood. the piece was about a foot long but far from flat. It has worked fine for several relief carving I am working with.

You didn't mention the type wood but my personal preference would be to soak it in danish oil and when it dried perhaps spray a sating finish on it.
