Good sharp tools are a must for clean up of your letters. But why worry about making the background smooth, you will spend more time than all the rest of your project. Professional instructors often say "bust up" the background. I use a leather working tool, it leaves a mottled effect. Also it drives some of those fuzzies into the board so you are not forever picking & sanding. Good project. Bob
