I agree with those recommending Heinecke Wood Products...they are of a very high quality. The wood is flawless and perfectly straight and the shipping is fast. Here's a link: www.heineckewood.com......Harold

Try ebay.
I got a 6/4 (1.5"thick) x 10.5" x 48" basswood for $20 + $12 shipping.

Then I got a 4/4 x 10.5" x 40" Honduras Mahogany for (get this) $9 + shipping.

Today I got a 4/4 x 7 x 36 butternut in the mail that I paid 9.99 for.
(I'm never going back to basswood after carving on this beauty!)

I do relief carving mostly so I can get a lot of blocks out of this stuff with my circular saw.

I probably shouldn't tell you this, I don't need the competition..

Doh!

I'm going to try Heinecke. Found out about them from Gerald Sears site. They have 2x2x12 bass for $1.75 whereas the Woodcraft in Richmond sells it for about $7.99 now. Even with shipping, I think I'd come out ahead

Any supplier from the norther tier of states or Canada will have good wood. The cost of the wood is a minor consideration when you figure in the time you put into a carving. Exactly how far south you can go and still get good wood I don't know, but Tennessee is too far south. I'd stick with MN, WI, MI, etc.

I can't believe I forgot about Rockler's. DOH! I used them alot when I was doing custom finish work. Never thought to check them out for carving.

thanks for the reminder.

I'm making my first purchases today since my bills are caught up and it's payday.

Hello Ed,
Welcome to the woodcarving family of WCI. I wood recomend to you Ed to try and look for alternate sources other than Michaels... (Michaels) is one of those 'used to be' stores, that put other 'used to be stores' (Fabric Bonanza, and Treasure Island) out of business. They used to be... cheap. For wood i would recommend an alternates source, like lindenwood (tilia) same as basswood. I go to the parks to find my wood. Usually deadfall, or fresh deadfall... I carve with Sycamore, Fresh Maple, Lindenwood, Basswood, Radiata pine, Poplar... Some of these woods can be found in the parks, or the forrests, or at homedepot, or loews... Claude has a great answer. I usually try to find old bed posts in the garbage, or balustrades. Sources are endless.
Sincerely Rob (Lazy C.)

Note that this is an 'old' thread..... a spam poster brought it back to the front page.
