Ok, maybe not my first piece, I have been away from the blade for about 15 years after doing a few relief style signs and an assortment of 3d pieces. Now I have the fever again and will be picking up the blade again. I have an assortment of Swiss chisels and a set of Butz knives. Any suggestions for a "starter piece" Thanks. Rip |

I would suggest that you browse thru the Carver Image Gallery in the category of your interests. You may see someone's work that inspires your next project.

Well, Rip, we're glad to welcome you here. Gosh, 15 years since you carved reliefs--it's a great time to start again. There's an assortment of free carving patterns on the left side of this screen, under Carving Community. Surf through them and see if anything looks interesting. Caricatures, walking sticks, relief, animals, chip carving--there's so much from which to choose. Let us know if you have any questions about anything related to carving. Sounds like you have some basic tools and should do fine. You'll be a little rusty, but I'll bet you just pick it up again--almost where you left off 15 years ago. Donna_T

After a 15 year rest, it will be time to awake those skills with a nice new sign for your home or shop. Perhaps your name with some kind of decorative relief on either side of it. Perhaps a motif of wood carving tools, to let the world know that you are back in the carving groove! Your design skills will no doubt need some dusting off, so take your time and sketch up a few ideas before applying them to wood. Most importantly, get those tools to work and your soul will be revitilized with the sounds of the "ssssshhhhhpppp" of chips being curled off the wood. Welcome back. Bob
