First carving ever? You have some talent. You defintely have looked at facial features to get that down so quick. I think it's a great job and you will definitely improve the more you practice. Some of mine don't look that good yet. lol

Is that pine wood? Basswood is easier to carve if you can get some.

Thank you for sharing and keep sending us pics. It inspires me looking at other folks work. There are lots of talented folks on here that will help you with any questions or problems. I love this place. Paul

That's a nice effort. Better than the one I first attempted. I started with a utility knife and it was a couple of months later that I bought a proper carving knife. I still use a utility knife to do rough out. Just like you I was impatient to get started some 7 months ago, and after I did I was hooked. Keep it up and you'll enjoy it every time you carve or paint. Safe carving to you.

Lawrence (or call me Ezzy, if you like)

Thanks for the kind comments really appreciated this is the knife I used

As you can see it isnt the best for carving..I should have my knives by Monday so cant wait to get started for real.

I think it is pine...just found it in the shed and thought it would do until I get some lime or Basswood. I really appreciate your kind comments I watched a couple of you tube videos and gave it a shot....really looking forward to getting my knives on monday and have a second attempt.

I don't see anything to laugh about. That's a great carving for, especially for a first.

invasion, I made several of those about the same size and yours is well done. Nicely balanced face. Keep at it. You have the touch.

Nice job. Pine isn't the easiest to carve, even for more experienced carvers. The utility knife isn't a bad choice either. You should know it's best to run a new blade across a strop to get the factory burr off and then you'll have an extremely sharp tool to start, which is more than most start out using. I see you knew to start carving on the corner which is something I learned only a few years ago. Keep carving, you have some natural skill.
